3 things you should know about new windowsBuying windows isn’t something most homeowners do more than once in their lives. If they do it more than once, chances are good it’s many years apart and things changed. If it’s time for new windows for your home, here are three key things you should know before you make the investment of replacement windows.

1.      National Brands Aren’t Necessarily Better

Because the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) is an independent third party who rates windows, you can compare the energy-efficiency of any brand window to any other brand window. You can also find that most window brands have tiers of windows with different manufacturing processes that will make them stronger and last longer. When comparing a national brand to a local brand, you should compare the NFRC energy-efficiency information, materials, manufacturing process, and warranty.

2.      You May Not Want the Same Window Style

Just because your home currently has single hung windows, that may not be the right option for your replacement windows. If you want windows that are easier to clean, consider double hung windows that tilt in. For a more expansive view, consider casement or sliding windows. If you want more light in a room, talk to your window company about replacing a single window or picture window with a bay or bow window.

3.      Don’t Buy More Than You Need

Some sales people are on a quota or have a sales spiff where they make more money if they sell a certain window with specific features. If you don’t need an upgrade, don’t agree to it, no matter how appealing the sales person makes it sound. Some of the upgrades that are usually unnecessary, especially in Greensboro and Winston-Salem, are gas filled panes, triple pane windows and impact resistant glass.
